Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses implants to increase breast size and volume. Breast augmentation is safe with many positive results including a renewed sense of self-confidence. Your consult with Dr. Novia will help you to determine what size, shape and approach is best for you.

Why Women Choose Augmentation

Women have a variety of reasons for seeking breast augmentation that go beyond increasing natural breast size:

  • Volume Loss After Pregnancy, Nursing or Weight Reduction
  • Balance Correction for Women with Inconsistent Breast Size
  • Following a Mastectomy or Lumpectomy

Augmentation is an individual choice with many options for you to look and feel your best.

Your Size and Shape

When considering size and shape, choosing the right combination includes several factors:

  • Breast Width
  • Balance with Hips and Natural Curves
  • Breast Shape
  • Breast Tissue in Relationship to the Size of Your Implant

Your lifestyle is also a point of consideration; if you are athletic, larger breasts may impede sports and exercise. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (CCs) rather than cup size. The lack of breast tissue can cause implant edges to show and create additional risks if the volume of the implant is too large. Implant shape may also influence your decision; a teardrop shape has a natural slope while a round shape arcs at the top of the breast. Working with Dr. Novia, you will choose the shape and volume that complements your frame and lifestyle.

Surgery, Incisions and Placement

Performed under general anesthesia, augmentation is an outpatient surgery. Incisions may be made in one of four areas:

  • Beneath the Breast
  • Under the Arm
  • Around the Nipple
  • In the Navel (TUBA)

Implants are placed either beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the muscle (submuscular).

What to Expect After Surgery

A friend or family member will be required to take you home after surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Dr. Novia will prescribe medication to control pain. Tightness in the breast area is normal and is a result of the body’s attempt to adapt to your implants.

Resuming normal activities such as free movement, walking or low impact exercise can be expected in the first week. You may return to work within a few days of your surgery but must avoid heavy lifting and high impact exercise for up to four weeks.
